Our goal, in the into to urban sketching, is to show you the basics and give you the experience and courage to sketch  in a coffee shop or market on your own.
There are many opportunities to travel the world and engage in urban sketching with group of sketchers. But for someone who never sketch before in public, or who may be a good painter but does not have the foundation of basic drawing, it may be intimidating to join others who are already doing it!
So we created this intensive course to help you learn the secrets of drawing from life and take the fear out of sketching. Especially for individuals who love to travel, or are looking for a fun hobby after retirement, or want to improve their art, this is a fun way to expend your experience.
Contact us asap with your travel schedule and reserve your spot.
While for the Sketching workshop we accept up to 12 participants, for the Intro to Watercolor we only accept 4.

Sketching in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

A beautiful sunny day! I spent about 15-20 min enjoying the sun in my yard and sketching a little.
When I started I did not  know how much I'll include in the sketch since it was so much in front of me!

More sketches of people on the go

Some sketches can become more elaborate. The subject relaxed on the bench, reads a paper in the park, or in my case it's a vendor attending his merchandise.

Quick sketch 1-2 minutes as I struggle to capture the hat.

I had the opportunity to capture more details in the sweatshirt, indicate the merchandise around/

More inspiration around my yard

One way to start a sketch is to start with a pint of interest such as a fountain or tower, light poll.
Well I know that and it's a good rule but here I intended to start with the fountain but the plant next to the chair got my attention, so guess what? This where I started. From there all the rest is build in relationship with that hape, following the outline or negative space

Sketching in my yard

You don't have to go very far to find sketching subjects.

Yesterday afternoon I sat in the shade and sketch a little. Started with the wheelbarrow, moved into the plants behind it and so on to the wall in the background. Then my dog laid right in front of me chewing a stick. As always didn't stay long, moved away with the stick. This is how much i could capture.

Sketching people in the market

At time a create a composite, sketching several subjects on the same page, I am not very picky about this type of sketching. Who ever is in front of me a sketch when I am not busy selling or talking to people passing by my art. I am never board! Also sketching give one so much inspiration and new topics!
I LOVE shapes! This is the essence of any painting or sketch . The interaction / or negative space, fascinates me, later came the color, well depend.
First I get interested in the shapes , when I paint I start with color which represent mood, personal experience, time of day, season. The the color and shapes blend into an expression of whatever the painting wants to be.
An example of a composite.
When I sketched I used whatever part of the page I had available.
No thought for composition, even though I could have kept it in mind.
The figure on the far left took less the 5 sec since she walked away
The man in traditional hat/ a vendor, was in front of me for some time but he
removed the hat, and turn around, not standing still much,
so i had to capture details here and there.

The sketch of this 3 shoppers was done one at a time since they were not together.
I spent 1-2 min on each of the shoppers.

Last sketches done at the Art Fair in San Miguel de Allende

This are few more sketches I'll like to share with you, all done here and there during the last weekend art and crafts fair in San Miguel de Allende, Gto., México.
I hope they inspire you to start skating yourself.

Sketching is a personal thing, you do not need to share it with no one.
You can use it just to relax and let go,
as a first stage of a painting,
to enhance your travel around the World,
It is different from a photograph, I do love photography, (and take MANY photos, print them and sell them) but sketching provides a deeper observation of live, a way to engage the outer world and to internalize it and express it almost like designing reality.

Sketching people

Last weekend I participated in an arts and crafts fair in San Miguel de Allende. I love this events! I can have direct contact with art lovers, many stop by to chat, make appointments to visit my studio or to ask questions and register for classes. It is an unique experience I recommend to any artist no matter how new or seasoned. To me it's pure fun, this is why I continue doing it for the last 9 years.
For the next 5-7 days I'll post sketches of people vendors and shopper. When sketching people at an event or bus stop you have 10 sec to may be 3 min. People will move as they look around so I sketch without looking at the paper, at least for the first 10-15 sec. since I don't know how long they'll stay in one spot or or one posture.

Trust that your hand extended into your pen will follow the eye/ brain signals.
One student told me that a friend artist told he " DONT MAKE IT PRECIOUS!"
I agree, it's just for your enjoyment .

10 to 15 sec. sketch. The couple moved on fast
so could not get more then few lines on the page.
I sketched looking at the subject 90% of the time and just picking
a little at the page.

I spent a little longer on
This sketch 1 -2 min
As the couple looked at the merchandise of the vendor across from me.
Still needed to move fast since they were moving constantly as picking up
merchandise and talking.
